Lesley McInally’s functional pieces capture landscapes with primitive childlike qualities and
often explore the dramatic seascapes of expressionist paintings.
Each piece tells its own unique story and often takes the viewer on a nostalgic dreamlike
journey.
How each piece is created:
This porcelain mug has been individually thrown and hand trimmed. Once the handle has been
attached I add ceramic pigments to porcelain slip and layers of colour are applied and
reworked to build up a beautifully tactile and visually stimulating surface.
Once bisque fired more layers of underglaze colours are added and sanded back thus building
up an even richer depth of surface texture. It is then fired to a Stoneware temperature with a
glossy glaze which enhances the colours. You will also find small indentations on this mug
which are designed for your fingers to find, hold and caress. Decals have then been applied
and the item is fired for a third time. The decals are made from either 22ct Gold, Platinum Silver
or copper.
Please note each cup is individually hand made, shaped and painted. No two are ever the
same and I like to think of them as siblings. I purposely squeeze each shape and leave
indentations for fingers to find. This is about making a personal connection to the maker and
the personal experience of holding and using each piece.Note: These pieces are individually hand made and full of texture from slips which means the
glazed surface can appear mottled at times. The odd iron fleck sometimes also appears from
the porcelain clay body and this is a natural occurrence.
