There will be many demonstrations on how to roll, texture, stretch slabs and how to achieve different effects with a combination of slabs, coiling and pinching. Lesley will also demonstrate how to use hump and slump moulds. Experimentation will be encouraged to produce small scale vessels. Surface treatments.
August 11th -16.
Embark on a diverse exploration of surface techniques with a primary focus on cultivating an exciting vocabulary of expressive clay surfaces. This course will cover the creation and incorporation of slip, coloured slips, underglazes, ceramic chalks, ceramic transfers, stains and oxides.Through playful experimentation using techniques such as brushwork, slip trailing, stencilling, and mono printing, you will navigate a distinctive personal journey and generate a multitude of ideas to be translated into your own unique artistic language. Each new demonstrated technique will be applied to small clay test tiles and one small slab vessel. All test tiles will undergo a bisque firing with selected pieces subsequently being completed by a cone 6 glaze firing witch can be collected on the last day of class. Please note this is a 6 day course with the last day reserved for discussion, clean up, and collection of all pieces from the glaze firing.

Surface effect details
In this workshop I will share some of my surface techniques using slips, ceramic chalks, underglazes and monoprint. I will teach you how to make slip, how to add coloured pigments, how to make your own chalks and how to mono print onto clay.
I will then demonstrate how to create some very exciting surfaces onto clay tiles and a finished vessel.

In this workshop we will be making slip, how to make coloured slips using ceramic pigments, how to use ceramic chalks and create your own. We will discuss underglazes and finally I will then demonstrate to you step by step how to use them all with mono printing onto clay tiles and a vessel.
In the end you will be inspired to explore and investigate these techniques in your own studio.
